Protection from the sun and its effects plays a vital role for any piece of architecture, especially when in the tropics. Designing around this need led to numerous iterations of the traditional gable roof, until shade, heat control, and privacy were all factored into the shape and placement of the roof. The roof is designed to work with trees to create a combination of natural and manmade shade. Connection to the outdoors is key to the design and enjoying the environment. The original and new floor now open up to the world with large folding doors, creating true indoor-outdoor living. The kitchens are a key portion of this space, and can vent heat into the outdoors instead of the home. Finally, spaces are created behind each set of homes that act as public meeting spaces for kids, adults, friends, and families.
