LA Housing Solution
Fall 2024
With the housing crisis in major cities like Los Angeles only getting worse, it is vital that we create new solutions to affordable housing that people want to call home. One possible solution is 3d printing with concrete. This new technology not only saves on material and manpower but allows for otherwise expensive designs to be printed with ease.
I started by looking into the actual issues in LA. While housing is available in the city, it has become too expensive for the majority. This only makes the idea of a new construction method more exciting. I then decided to use another unique aspect of cement 3d printing: the idea that the interior and exterior do not have to be the same shape. The exterior of these homes is sharp and angular, while the interiors are soft and curvy.
A wooden cap housing 4 skylights rests atop each structure to provide ample lighting throughout the day. To create playfulness, different colored paints were added to each home, creating a sense of individuality.
